Design Visualization - Project 1 (Sketches)

This was the first assignment given to us for the module, Design Visualization. This assignment concentrated on application of different types of sketching, rendering technique and rendering media. The objective of this assignment is to identify a personal and expressive response to visual stimulation, to apply basic principles and elements of design and drawing as a language to visualize and communicate ideas.

We were required to produce 8 sketches on A5 sized papers based on 8 different titles.

A. Body part/Figure/Nature (Charcoal)
B. Object projection (Charcoal)
C. Detail (Pencil)
D. Geometric Projection (Artline)
E. Tracing (Artline on tracing paper)
F. One point perspective of TULC (Artline)
G. Two point perspective of TULC (Artline)
H. Artistic Representation of a famous building (Mix media)

Before I started working on my real pieces, I had decided to do some research about different drawing techniques using different tools. Besides, I had also did a few sketches on my sketchbook before starting off working on the final ones.

And after a few nights of working on this assignment, I was finally done with the 8 sketches.

1. Body part - Collarbone

2. Object projection - Camera

3. Detail - Part of Pisa Leaning Tower

4. Geometric Projection

5. Tracing

 6. One point perspective

7. Two point perspective

8. Artistic Representation - Eiffel Tower

After completing this assignment, I had learned how to draw and sketch using different types of tools, how to handle and work these tools well so that I can produce nice drawings. In this assignment, we had to use charcoal, pencil, artline and some other mix media which is kind of different from the usual pencil that we always use for sketching. I think I had gained more knowledge about the techniques of drawing through this project and it definitely gonna help me out a lot in the future. Besides, producing 8 sketches in a given short period was never easy for someone who rarely draw like me. I took it as a challenge for myself and did my best in order to produce the best outcomes. It was very good experience and a great practice before we head on to more challenging projects.

Culture and Civilization - Final Project (Postcard Series)

This was the final project assigned in this module, Culture and Civilization. The objective of this project is to introduce the Western and Eastern culture and civilization through an overview of an archeological discoveries, ancient monuments, artworks, philosophy and achievement of great leaders from prehistoric to present, to show basic skills on enquiry, investigation, application and presentation of relevant information.

For this assignment, we were first required to do a literature research on places of interest of our site visit. We were required to study the theme given and its connection between the historical, architectural and social aspects of the place. And next we had to create a postcard series which consists of 10 postcards and a fine designed packaging that complement the whole series.

There were two themes for us to choose which included :

1. Food culture
- Kopitiam
- Street food
- Coffee culture

2. Architecture
- Malaysian architecture
- Fusion
- Religious places
- Spaces and People

As for me, I had chosen spaces and people which is under Architecture. I had first thought of a few places which suits my theme including Melaka, Penang and Ipoh. In the end, I had chosen Jonker Street Melaka.
With the guidance by my tutor, Ms. Delliya I had picked the final concept for my postcard series which is Nostalgia. Based on the concept chosen, I went to Melaka twice to take the photos till I got the best results.
After a few discussions and tutorial session with my tutor, we had finalized the last 10 photos that will be printed into postcards.

Then I started working on editing the photos to create a stronger ambiance of nostalgia which reminisced the good old times of the people at the place.

I had also designed the back template and packaging for my postcards.

The initial layout of the back template of my postcards.

Final results for the back template of my postcards.

And the packaging.

Report

This assignment had helped me alot in presenting my ideas and thoughts into a different form which is through photos and postcards. The research and site visits I had done also helped me in getting to know more about the Malaysian culture, the people culture in Melaka. I had also discovered many things about the place I had chosen which I usually missed them out for example the beauty and nostalgic ambiance of the place. Besides, I had also learned a lot about photo editing while doing this assignment. I also got better in organizing my work and keep them up to date at times with the help of the tutorials given by my tutor.

Culture and Civilization - Project 2 (Messages from the Past)

This was the second project assigned to us and the objective of this assignment is to examine the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western civilizations.

Group
We were first given a movie to study on. And then we were suppose to do search and further analyse the specific given timeline of the movies through books and internet which we also need to include the culture, social strata, architecture and style. Next, we had to select the most important plot/scene from the timeline for our performance.

The movie that we gotten was Troy. After being assigned with the movie, my group which included Sharon Lim, Yuheng, Kelvin Fong, Eunice Chan and Chee Siang had our first group meeting to watch and study the movie together.

After watching the full movie, we started dividing the roles in the movie and picking the important scenes that we will be doing. And next we had to start working on the props and costumes.

In the progress of making the props :

In the progress of making costumes :

We spent around two weeks or more in making the props and costumes. Besides, we had also went through many times of meeting to decide on our scenes and parts so that we can fully understand each person's roles more precisely and correctly.

We had decided to film our video at Afamosa, Melaka. And we went there for 3 days 2 nights to complete the filming of the video.

We had the final discussion on the night before our filming day, also did a few times of rehearsal.

On the filming days :

Individual
For the individual part, our task was to study the character chosen in detailed that would demonstrate our understanding of the chosen elements for the group task. Next, we were to make an A5 booklet based on our character which comprised of series of sketches, colored, completed with annotation and packaging.

My chosen character was Paris, the prince of Troy. I started doing research about the character right after I gotten this character. What I did was, I researched on his history and background in the Greek Mythology and then in the movie. I compared all elements from both the mythology and also the movie and translated the information I had gotten into the A5 individual booklet.

After completing this assignment, first I got to know and understand more detailed about the background and history of Greek mythology, the development of civilization of the past. I had also learned how to translate and present the things I had studied into a form that can be understand clearly by everyone. Besides, I had learned to compromise and accept different opinions while working in a group. During the time of doing this assignment, we sometimes had small conflicts within the members as everyone had their different point of views, but we tried our best to sort every matter out in a better way without breaking the team apart. And most importantly, it was by far the best assignment ever in the whole FNBE semester. As a group, we experienced alot throughout the days in producing this, we went through all the ups and downs but still able to stay as one and completed the project at our best.
